Bug Description

Binary package hint: fotoxx

Installed Fotoxx (fotoxx v.8.7 2009.11.25) from repositories on 64 and 32 bit Lucid
(e.g. 2.6.32-24-generic #39-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jul 28 05:14:15 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux)

Fotoxx file access to NAS files via samba shares works fine on the 64 bit version but fails to access files with the 32 bit version. Local image file access with the 32 bit version work fine.

This is very similar to the problem Geequi has that appears to be due to word size problems in file structures with SMB. Do Geequi and Fotoxx use the same file access code? Or is it something else. Has this issue been addressed in the newer versions of Fotoxx not in Lucid's respositories?

Files on samba shares can be accessed via the "Recently used" route if you view the file in another viewer first...

fotoxx uses standard GTK dialog to open files, like most other Gnome apps. If 64-bit works but 32-bit fails, the problem is likely in the GTK library libgtk2.0 or something called from there.

Kornelix, thanks for your quick reply and for keeping an eye on fotoxx bugs on Launchpad (not all app developers do)

I assumed you used a standard GNOME dialogue, but curiously, there seem to be 2 different dialogue boxes in play: GIMP, OpenOffice and Totem, for example, work fine with samba shares, whereas some applications (like fotoxx) just don't show them. As an end user I can't tell what causes the difference except that there is something "funny" going on...?

This problem also affects Deluge - samba shares are absent both when adding a file or selecting a destination for the "move storage" function.

Further investigation reveals this is probably a duplicate of Bug #304345 - a bug in the GTK file chooser that prevents a string of applications to select samba shares.

Workaround: Browser to the desired location in Nautilus, then use the file chooser and go to {home directory}/.gvfs/{desired share}
