Bug Description

Binary package hint: im-switch

The im-switch application is not internationalised, and thus is only useful for English speakers.

Its main purpose being allowing non-English users to switch between input methods, it would just make sense for it to have natural language support.

The application is currently a shell script that uses zenity to create a UI dialog. Here [1] is an example of how a zenity shell script can be internationalised.

As far as I know, the author of im-switch is writing new im-config,
and will perhaps replace im-switch in the near future.

Changed importance to low: the program is no longer shown in the menus, and its functionality is already integrated in gnome-language-selector, which is fully internationalized.

Mark as won't fix, because im-switch is getting dropped in favor of im-config.

im-switch is back as a dependency of ubuntu-desktop and language-selector, and still does not speak languages. Its supposed replacement im-config would need a newer package version that has gettext support and inclusion in main.

We need to replace im-switch with im-config as soon as we can, because currently input methods maintainers on Debian side are only guaranteeing the user experience with im-config, and for sure im-switch may cause weird problems. Further more, im-switch is not maintained upstream (which is Debian), so making it i18n really aren't worth it.

For raring, im-config will be default and language-selector has been ported to use it, so I guess this bug can be closed now.
