Bug Description

Binary package hint: empathy

In ubuntu 10.04, after first removing empathy packages and then installing them again. A redundant notification icon appears. There is no way to remove this and it's function is completely redundant since the inclusion of messaging menu in the indicator applet of 10.04.

After installing empathy again can you try to logout and login again and then start empathy and check if it appears in the notification area? or in empathy preferences in notifications tab there is an option to disable this icon.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem. We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

In this case a screenshot of the issue would help greatly as well. This may in fact be an indicator applet issue and not an empathy one.

I think I'm seeing the same behavior, so let me try to fill in the details. I upgraded to Lucid last week and I have empathy v2.30.1-0ubuntu1 and indicator-me v0.2.6-0ubuntu1. My panel indicator area looks like the attached: the MeMenu has an icon indicating my availability on the right-hand side and Empathy has an icon with an identical appearance on the left-hand side. The icons behave differently when clicked (bringing up the MeMenu and activating the Empathy window, respectively), but as status indicators they are redundant.

By default, I would expect the Empathy icon to go away and for the functionality it exposes to be folded into the MeMenu somehow. I would also expect there to be a configuration option to turn off the Empathy notification icon (if I understand correctly, this is required by the status menu design guidelines: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/CustomStatusMenuDesignGuidelines).

I think I've figured this out. Previously, I did not have the Indicator Applet on my Panel (it was not added on upgrade Lucid). When I add the Indicator Applet to the Panel, the redundant Empathy icon disappears and is replaced by the Messaging Menu, as in the attached. (The Indicator Applet also takes over the Rhythmbox icon and leaves all the "old-style" application icons in the Notification Area.)
