Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox

I've just upgraded from Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron to Lucid Lynx 10.04 (both LTS releases). Firefox now freezes as soon as I click on a menu item like File, Edit, etc. or on an item in the Bookmarks Toolbar. The same goes for right-clicking on a Bookmarks Toolbar item or even on a misspelled word in a text box. After a While, System Monitor shows a spike of CPU activity for Firefox, and Firefox becomes unfrozen. (Or is it that just switching to System Monitor and switching back to Firefox that does it?). But trying the menus and Bookmarks Toolbar would freeze it again.

I can still use Firefox to go to a URL by typing it in the address bar, or by linking from one page to another (it even opens from another program like ubuntu-bug). But the functionality is severely degraded when the items listed above are broken.

I've reinstalled both Firefox and xulrunner. I also used Firefox Safe Mode (Terminal > firefox --safe-mode) and uninstalled flash-plugin using System > Administration > Synaptic Package manager (based on some things I'd read in forums and bug reports). But the problem remains.

Note: this may be related to Bug #401823 because if I launch Firefox from a terminal with firefox --safe-mode
I get the same error output as in that bug. I think that my situation is different (worse!) because that bug does not say Firefox freezes, only that there is annoying error output. But my Firefox actually freezes.

Other browsers (Konqueror, Epiphany) work without problems, but I'd like to get Firefox back, please!

Thanks in advance for your help.

Sorry, that should have been "uninstalled adobe-flashplugin".

Completely removing Firefox in Synaptic and reinstalling it did not help, either.

Problem seems to be gone after removing old Firefox /home/.mozilla folder to another location, reinstalling Firefox and Flash, running Firefox in Safe Mode and selecting the options to reset everything, then selecting a Persona from the default Firefox page, and rebooting the computer. Whew!

Not sure which of the above did the trick, though. Sorry for the unscientific approach - I was in a bit of a hurry.

I still wonder what had been wrong to begin with, and how to ensure that it never comes back.

I have exactly the same problem and reinstalling firefox did not help.

It started when i upgraded from Karmic to Lucid.
Symptoms: firefox hangs (not responding and colored bw by compiz) for about 30 seconds before any firefox dialog or popup opens. After about 30 seconds it works normally. While hanging no CPU or memory activity from firefox process at all.

I tried purging all firefox packages and plugins and removed .mozilla directory from my home directory, nothing helps :((

I have made an upgrade from Karmic to Lucid on several computers and only one have this problem.
