Bug Description

Binary package hint: empathy

freenode is not the default IRC server in Empathy. Through past tireless bug reporting on the part of others, freenode is the default IRC server in most (all?) other IRC clients shipped with Ubuntu, to aid new users in getting IRC support. Empathy, as the only pre-installed IRC-capable client on Ubuntu desktop computers should also default to freenode, instead of the first network in the (alphabetically-sorted) network list.

linked empathy upstream bug report. as empathy developers seemed interested for changing the default server. attach your patch to the upstream bug report. I cant as this debdiff contains the packaging stuff in it too.

I dont really see why Upstream would make this change. They dont use freenode. Such changes can be done at a distro level.

because empathy is created for users. and there users will use empathy for IRC support and distro support is on #ubuntu #freenode #meego on freenode.

That doesnt have to mean that upstream have to set it to freenode.
The patch does the right thing in setting a default network when nothing
has been set already.
However i dont see why the network has to be freenode when none of gnome
channels are on freenode.
IMO /freenode/ is a distro setting, each distro should just change it to
which ever they use.

Same was done when Pidgin was default[thanks bilal], when it was the
default. The network was changed to Ubuntu for Ubuntu.

If upstream wants to do it, its nice but still weird. ;)

the suggestion they made was:
maybe force freenode to be first in the list, gimpnet the 2nd, then the rest
in alpha order

why are we changing the list order? what does that have to do with this bug? Or how does it solve this bug?

@Bilal: what does your patch effectively do? Are you adding a new network to the list?
We already have "Ubuntu servers" listed in the options. To fix this bug , we just need to have the "Ubuntu servers" selected as the default option.

looking at bilal's patch. It should select *freenode* as default irc network (not changing its position). as you expect.

Bilal Akhtar (bilalakhtar) wrote :

@Vish, Omer is right that my patch selects freenode as default server. It first checks if an already-existing account is being loaded, else it forces the drop-down list to default to Freenode. This is all it does.
