Bug Description

This bugfix is part of the upstream stable update for Lucid to 2.6.32.13 (see Bug #583414).

This is a near-duplicate of bug #553022

The headphone jack correctly disables the builtin speakers, but does not emit
any sound. Passing "model=dell-m6" as a module option to snd-hda-intel is a
workaround.

The abovementioned fix has been included upstream in kernel 2.6.34-rc6. From the changelog:

commit 5c1bccf645d4ab65e4c7502acb42e8b9afdb5bdc
Author: Daniel T Chen
Date: Thu Apr 22 17:54:45 2010 -0400

ALSA: hda: Use STAC_DELL_M6_BOTH quirk for Dell Studio 1558

    BugLink: https://launchpad.net/bugs/568600

The OR has verified that the dell-m6 model quirk is necessary for audio
to be audible by default on the Dell Studio XPS 1645.

This change is necessary for 2.6.32.11 and 2.6.33.2 alike.

This apparently didn't get commited? The fix has regressed in the 2.6.32-22-generic kernel that was just pushed, and my headphones are dead again.

What is the package name in lucid-proposed? I have enabled -proposed, and see the list of those. Which one do I try?
I am trying to get a dell studio xps to play sound through the headphone jack. Thanks.

you want the proposed new kernel package: linux-image-2.6.32-23-xxxx (perhaps the headers too - if you have any dkms modules that must be recompiled).
