Hi Richard,

There is a possible fix for this problem in the newly released 2.6.34-rc3 linux kernel. From the changelog:

Daniel Chen (1):
ALSA: ac97: Add Toshiba P500 to ac97 jack sense blacklist

There should soon be a PPA of this kernel RC at http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/ however if you are not experienced you should probably wait for the 2.6.34 final.

Kernel 2.6.34 will not be in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS "Lucid Lynx". Lucid is based on 2.6.32 with DRM backported from 2.6.33. However the fix for your bug has made it into kernel 2.6.32.11 upstream.
