Nobody has fixed this yet it looks like. So I cannot load any DVD software with a .exe file (ironically which includes the new external DVD drive I just got)

I think I am ready to upgrade to Windows, this ubuntu seems like a nice concept but pretty useless.

Many .exe files are not self-extracting archives (which are what File Roller can open) but are full-fledged Windows programs that should be opened in Wine.

Unfortunately, File Roller doesn't provide any message that can point the user to trying out Wine instead.

For now, I'll be closing this bug.

I've marked this bug as a duplicate of bug 508120. Anyone who wants to be able to run .exe files in Ubuntu should join in the discussion there. Thanks!
