I fail to see a reason why this should be actually needed.
If you don't want to have a menu entry for memtest86, why do you have
then the package installed?

1) Updater for GRUB1 configuration had such feature and I was using it;
GRUB2 revoked such feature without any substitute.

2) I don't use memtest86 on a regular basis so I don't want to clutter the
boot menu. On the other hand, I'd like to have memtest86 installed so
that I could run it manually from grub prompt in case system does not
boot - to eliminate the possible bad memory issue.

Alexey.

One workaround is to run

sudo chmod -x /etc/grub.d/20_memtest86+

in a terminal.

In response to comment #2: removing memtest86+ also removes ubuntu-standard. According to the package description, ubuntu-standard is used to ensure proper upgrades and it is recommended that it not be removed.
The solution in comment #4 works but I believe it would be undone the next time the grub package is updated.

If the ubuntu-standard dependency is set to "Recommends", memtest86+ will be easily removed without affecting/removing ubuntu-standard: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-meta/+bug/661626

Since it's the memtest86+ package that adds these options to the menu, that's also the package that would need to implement a way to disable them.
