Bug Description

I have a Huawei E220 USB modem. It worked in 2.6.28-11-generic (My First Jaunty Kernel on fresh Installation) but not working in 2.6.28-15-generic (after update).

It is detected on both kernels, but even i can connect on both kernels, there are several problems on 2.6.28-15:
1. Even though it can connect, i cannot access or connect to anything. The modem keeps stalled, as if there is no connection at all.
2. After the connection has been established, I cannot disconnect it from network manager. So, i have to unplug it instantly from the USB port if I want to disconnect from the net.

Note 1 : It works prefectly from my Windows Vista Home Premium on the same system.
Note 2 : I am curently using 2.6.28-11-generic when typing this report

I also cannot disconnect on both kernels. In my previous Ubuntu installation (kernel 2.6.28-13, I guess), however, all ran smoothly.

Hi Joshia,

Can you capture and attach dmesg output from the 2.6.28-15 kernel (after you've attempted to use the modem). I'm interested to see if there are any error messages printed to the logs.

Sorry for my delayed updates. Here are the files, the dmesg.txt is the dmesg output, while the dmesg-usb.txt is the "dmesg | grep usb" output

Hello, I confirm the BUG. My HUAWEI E226 modem works like a charm in the 2.6.28-11 but no longer for the -14 and -15 kernel releases. Thanks in advance!

have upgraded to karmic just now, and the modem still cannot communicate with ubuntu properly. It can connect, though I cannot browse anything nor update using any method

In karmic, I even cannot connect to the internet by using other than RNDIS (Wireless & Wired LAN) if:
1. I use "Automatic (DHCP)"
2. I type my router's address for my DNS server using "Automatic (DHCP) addresses only", or
3. I don't type a custom DNS address (Currently using 202.134.0.155 when typing this)

this problem didn't occur at all in Jaunty, and I've reinstalled Karmic for about 3 times but no luck at all

any suggestions? seems like everyone has abandoned this report. Sorry, but please answer. Thanks

Hi Joshia,

Sorry for the delay. It looks like there may be a few patches being pulled in via the upstream stable kernel that might help with this issue for Karmic. I'm trying to build test kernels right now. Will post links to the test kernel when it's finished building. Thanks.

Hi Joshia,

Can you give the 2.6.31.6 mainline kernel build a test in Karmic and let me know your results? Thanks.

And test kernels with the complete 2.6.31.6 patch set applied for testing are available at the following PPA. Again, please test and let us know your results.

oh yeah, if I have installed this kernel, can I still get the latest kernel updates from the main server or rollback to my previous version?

OK, I am currently downloading and installing the kernel from Stefan Bader's PPA. Will post the result around tomorrow.

OK, now i currently running the new kernel (2.5.31-16 actually, sorry, it was not 2.5.31-6) from Stefan Bader's PPA and here is the result:
1. The virtual CD-ROM device in my Huawei E220 containing the Windows application (not the Macintosh partition) can be detected again (not detected since around Hardy, if I am not mistaken)
2. The modem connects to the mobile network more quickly (Connecting... OK)
3. I still can use my WM6 device's internet sharing to connect to the internet (using the same USIM card and provider)
4. my DNS lookup issue solved

But, the main problem hasn't solved. I still cannot browse anything, nor updating using the Update Manager while I am connected to the mobile network using the E220, even the modem status is "Connected" in the Network Manager Applet.

I might not be available next week, but you can reply me any time. I will try to check for update on this report if I have time.

Thanks.

Joshia You have right I using my build of kernel 2.6.31.6-ext73-gtr and ... using this one on Ubuntu 9.04 where H220 working great ! ... and in 9.10 where are bugs like: not recognizing modem (only storage with windows drivers ;/), conected, but sysetem apps dont have connection, etc. ... I think this is problem with network manager and other system configuration !

Yeah, that's it. That's the exact problem as I am. I thought so too. My Network Manager states that my machine is connected to the net, but I cannot browse anything. The light keeps on dark blue (UMTS), and even when the light changes to light blue (HSDPA), no data transferred.

Just upgrades an ASUS EEE to Karmic UNR (2.6.31.14-generic) and have the same issues (Huawei E220 on Three Australia).

Modem connects - light goes greenish blue for a moment and then goes dark blue. System reports that it is connected (IP addresses are assigned) but no ability to use network.

Is there any likelyhood if this being patched soon ? I love 9.10 UNR, but without 3G connection a netbook is useless.

Asus EEEPC 900, upgraded to Karmic UNR 2.6.31-19 and now cannot get dependable internet connectivity even though my Huwaei E220 says its connected to Three Australia.

Sometimes it works, more often than not I have to reboot several times before I jag it.
