cannot subscribe to bugs if there's a + sign in username

Bug Description
The new ajax subscribe form doesn't work for me. It seems the problem is triggered by the fact that my launchpad username contains a + sign.
When I hit "subscribe" i get an ajax popup that says:
"Error The following errors were encountered: There was an error in subscribing. Please wait a little and try again."
The firebug console reveals a 400 bad request with the response:

It has turned the + in my username into a space.
