This may be a duplicate of bug 286424.
To reproduce:
Using a freshly upgraded Jaunty (current as of this morning, 15-Feb-09), select System-
A window pops up with the question, "It appears that your graphics driver does not support the necessary extensions to use this tool. Do you want to use your graphics driver vendor's tool instead?" Select "Yes."
In the "NVIDIA X Server Settings" window, select "X Server Display Configuration."
Click "Save to X Configuration File"
An error window appears with: "Failed to parse existing X config file '/etc/X11/
