Bug Description

I am interested in working on translating longer documents; however, the GNU Free Documentation license is not currently listed as an acceptable license for new projects.

Brad, should Launchpad support the documentation license? I know this was discussed some time ago.

I think Launchpad should support this since there are several documentation projects. Project can use other open source for now.

Note that the GNU FDL is really several different licenses, depending on which options one chooses.

It allows the author to specify optional "Invariant Sections" and/or "Front-Cover Text" and "Back-Cover Text". These are things that someone must leave unchanged if they're making a derivative work, and must include when printing up a "large" number of copies (more than 100). Note that for technical documentation, only non-technical sections (e.g., sections expressing personal opinions) can be labeled as Invariant.

By default, these options are off, and when they're off, the license is essentially a GPL for documentation. But when they're on, the license is somewhat less than "free", though it still gives enough freedom for redistribution and correction/updating of technical content.

Anyway: I think it would be appropriate for us to allow the license too, but wanted to make sure we all grok that it's not like other open-source licences.

See http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/fdl.html for details.

Once the license selection widget is reworked (see bug 333932) it would be easy-ish to add a section for GFDL or other non-software licenses. We should consider doing this as part of the license rework in guided project registration.
