Bug Description

Running a Dell Inspiron 8200 with Ubuntu 8:10 beta (Fully up to date)

Sound Card: Intel Corporation 82801CA/CAM AC'97 Audio Controller [8086:2485] (rev 02)
Version : Ubuntu 2.6.27-6.9-generic

When i shut down my Laptop it gets to "* Shutting down ALSA..."

I then have to wait 5 mins for ALSA to timeout for Shutdown to continue.

No other errors are seen when 'quiet' and 'splash' are removed and system rebooted.

*Update*

The delay time is roughly 150 seconds between the the shutdown requesting ALSA to shut down and the process timing out.

Manages to see some errors on my screen just as it shuts down.. (Screen shot attached.)

* Shutting down ALSA [OK]
* Stopping Bluetooth [OK]
* Stopping Avahi mDNS/DNS-SD Daemon avahi-daemon [OK]
* Asking all remaining processes to terminate... [OK]
NetworkManager: <WARN> dhcp_watch_cb(): dhcp client died abnormally

NetworkManager: <WARN> nm_signal_handler(): Caught signal 15, shutting down normally.

NetworkManager: <INFO> (eth0): device state change: 8 -> 9

NetworkManager: <INFO> Marking connection 'Auto eth0' invalid.

NetworkManager: <INFO> Activation 9etho0 failed.

acpid: exiting

The rest of the shutdown continues as normal...(not sure if the above is any help or not.)

I have been getting this too with an Intel 82801DB/DBL/DBM audio controller. (NEC VERSA M400)
I measured the shutdown stall as 2.5 minutes at the "Shutting down ALSA" line, followed by some rapid error messages before shutdown.
Todays update has made the PC go to a progress bar shutdown, pausing for some time at about 40%, but a lot less than 2.5 minutes

I have been on a wireless connection over the weekend and their is no pause when it shuts down

**
It only pauses when i have a network cable attached
The issue is with the wired networking.

I can confirm this bug here on a Toshiba Satellite U400, Ubuntu 8.10, latest updates up to Oct 13, 2008.

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)

avid@toshiba:~$ lsmod | grep hda
snd_hda_intel 381488 3
snd_pcm 83204 2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm_oss
snd 63268 13 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_pcm,snd_seq_oss,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq,snd_timer,snd_seq_device
snd_page_alloc 16136 2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm

Actually, I found a "solution" too. It works in my case:
In /etc/init.d/alsa-utils comment the line "mute_and_zero_levels "$TARGET_CARD" || EXITSTATUS=1" to "#mute_and_zero_levels "$TARGET_CARD" || EXITSTATUS=1". The mute_and_zero_levels call waits a very long time. In my case, I even thought it was forever.

By the way, I think it used to work about one month ago, but I'm not sure which alsa-utils version this was.

My report is also network related. The error messages after the long time out list dhcp client errors, so I don't think ALSA is really involved. My PC shuts down quickly on my office network, but takes minutes on an Aztech DSL router, so this bug depends on the dhcp server type

I can confirm the error, too. It is network related. My system hangs at "Shutting down ALSA" until
I use the hardware switch for Bluetooth/WLAN. After switching of Bluetooth/WLAN it works fine.

Bye,

Carsten
