Bug Description

I think the summary says enough.
How could I help to further determine the cause?
Starting rhythmbox in a terminal doesn't produce any useful information; is there a special command-line parameter for debug options?

Seems like rhythmbox has had this before in development hardy; perhaps regression?

Or is it a gstreamer error?

furthermore: sometimes rhythmbox not really freezes, but the playing song just can't be controlled anymore, and clicking another song just results in another playing song simultaneously with the out-of-control one

I think rhythmbox has a --debug parameter

thank you for your bug report, do you get the issue if you use alsa directly? can you get a rhythmbox --debug log, is there an error when you get the issue?

don't specify the ubuntu version in the title, there is no indication the bug is intrepid specific

Do you mean killing pulseaudio?

I'm having the same/similar issue. Using the xfade backend makes navigating impossible. If I move the slider, the song will often stop (while the slider can still be moved, having no effect), or rhythmbox just freezes. I have attached my log where I got the song-stopping problem twice, and on the third song I had rhythmbox freeze. I tested using ALSA, but pulseaudio has the same issue.

could somebody having the issue open a bug on bugzilla.gnome.org?

I found an upstream bug which appears to be the same issue.

There seem to be many symptoms (UI disconnect with song continuing or stopping, and rhythmbox freezing), but since it's caused by the same action (moving the slider) and only occurs with crossfade, I think it should be considered as the same bug, at least for now.

I have also noticed that when crossfading is enable, rhythmbox uses 75%-100% CPU for some mp3 file I play. Seems like a regression to this bug:

upstream change which fixes the issue: http://svn.gnome.org/viewvc/rhythmbox?view=revision&revision=5996

that might be a candidate for an intrepid update if the fix is confirmed to work on jaunty

The updated package from intrepid-proposed has fixed a similar issue I had. Thanks Martin !

Selecting a webradio was freezing rhythmbox with crossfade activated.

verification-done

Tested with rhythmbox 0.11.6svn20081008-0ubuntu4.1 from intrepid-updates, and immediately reproduced the problem again with xfade on (rhythmbox froze).

Tested with rhythmbox 0.11.6svn20081008-0ubuntu4.2 from intrepid-proposed, and I can successfully navigate a song without any freezing or other negative effects (tested over 100 navigations). Crossfade only applies on song changes, not within a song when navigating. It also takes a second to start playing the newly navigated position (compared to instantly without xfade), but this is a very minor problem compared to the freezing bug which has now been fixed.
