I can <Ctrl>+<Alt>+<Del> and the machine will reboot but the password prompt does not come up with normal activity and the screensaver itself appears frozen.

I'm having the same issue here since I've updated to intrepid
I'm running it on a macbook 1.1 and have compiz enabled
cpu: Genuine Intel(R) CPU T2500 @ 2.00GHz
gpu: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
$ dpkg -l gnome-screensaver |awk {'print $2" "$3'}
gnome-screensaver 2.23.3-0ubuntu1
I have to hold the power button to shut down the machine. No mouse/keyboard input seems to work. I don't think the system itself hangs as it responds to ping. Haven't tried logging on remotely though...
