Bug Description

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

After an upgrade from gutsy to hardy alpha 4 using update-manager -d, the sound didn't work properly, due to bad permissions in $HOME/.pulse and $HOME/.pulse-cookie

I saw this:
%pulseaudio
ALSA lib control.c:909:(snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL front:0
ALSA lib control.c:909:(snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL front:0
E: authkey.c: Failed to open cookie file '/home/cundy/.pulse-cookie': Permission denied
E: authkey.c: Failed to load authorization key '/home/cundy/.pulse-cookie': Permission denied
E: module.c: Failed to load module "module-native-protocol-unix" (argument: ""): initialization failed.
E: main.c: Module load failed.
E: main.c: failed to initialize daemon.

%ls -l /home/cundy/.pulse-cookie
-rw------- 1 root root 256 2008-02-04 18:34 /home/cundy/.pulse-cookie

After
%chown cundy:cundy /home/cundy/.pulse-cookie

I got

%pulseaudio
ALSA lib control.c:909:(snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL front:0
ALSA lib control.c:909:(snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL front:0

W: core-util.c: Failed to open configuration file '/home/cundy/.pulse/default-sink': Permission denied
W: core-util.c: Failed to open configuration file '/home/cundy/.pulse/default-source': Permission denied

I fixed it with

chown cundy:cundy /home/cundy/.pulse

and then sound started to work.

The permissions need to be fixed in whichever one of the pulseaudio packages is relevant.

How did you configure pulseaudio in gutsy? Per-user? Which groups? etc.

I can't recall in detail, but I never had any problems with the sound on this machine either with feisty or gutsy; so I would not have changed anything from the default options of the original package.

Did you, at any time, use "sudo pulseaudio"?

I got the same problem after upgrading from Hardy to Intrepid Alpha-6 (currently using beta with latest updates).

Sep 27 21:14:37 kmos pulseaudio[6340]: core-util.c: Failed to open configuration file '/home/kmos/.pulse/volume-restore.table': Permission denied

When I start something to play.. example: audacious, it shows this error message at /var/log/messages.

So I don't have any sound in my system.

I checked the .pulse directory and volume-restore.table file doesn't exist. I didn't touch it before.. so something made it disappear.

I think someone should look at Bug 231407, because it's affecting Intrepid beta.

can be worked around (suboptimally) by forcibly removing ~/.pulse*

I have been unable to reproduce this symptom using vbox Ubuntu VMs for (default) gutsy->hardy, hardy->intrepid, or intrepid->jaunty. I also am using ext3 for /home and /tmp. What are the FS types for those partitions for those of you experiencing this symptom?
