Bug Description

Binary package hint: evolution

I'm not quite sure if this is a gmail or an evolution bug, so I've also reported it as a gmail bug, we'll see what happens.

The thing is that sometimes (not reproducible) evolution fails to download some of the emails from gmail. The account is properly configured and there is no pattern for the "failed" emails, like sender, subject or anything. The messages still appear on gmail, but Evolution won't download them anymore.

I've been some days wondering why Evolution wouldn't download some of the emails, and today I just gazed the message "failed to download message 2 of 8" in the download status window. Evolution had downloaded the first of all unread emails and then stopped, being unable to "catch up" or something and redownload them later.

Maybe gmail thinks that the client has downloaded all messages properly and marks them as "downloaded"? I don't know, but the "failed to download message X of Y" also confuses me.

I don't really know how to debug this, and it seems to be a protocol problem. If you give me further instructions I'll be happy to provide more information

Thanks

Okay, I'll use both Evolution and Thunderbird for some days and I'll report back the results in a week or two, as soon as I can confirm or discard it.

Definitely, this is an Evolution bug. There is a bunch of messages that Evolution didn't download today but thunderbird did.

How can I help debugging this?

they know the code better since they write it and the desktop team has not the ressources to work on evolution bugs not easy to trigger like this one at the moment, having it sent upstream which is the right place would be nice indeed

Hello fellas;

I've been having the same problem but a lot more aggressive; I can't seem to download any new mail at all! I can download all the old mail fine but any new mail that arrives seems to be invisible to Evo. Any suggestions or requests for more information are welcome, I'm pulling my hair out on this one!

I'm having the same issue as well -- Evolution downloaded the forst 200 or so emails from gmail when I first configured it, but now it won't download any at all, and it only got about half my old messages.

Hi,

Very similiar problem as mine.

The interesting part (in my case) is that evolution actually downloads the message, but after that it is not shown in Inbox (it is there -- I can see the message via web-interface).
I've verified it using tcpdump and sending email with 1.5M attachment from other account, then trying to fetch it. Tcpdump clearly show that the message was downloaded.

I suspect that latest evolution update broke it. I will install older version and see if it works.

I'm using GMail, evolution 2.22.2-0ubuntu2, Ubuntu 8.04.

Downgrading to 2.22.2-0ubuntu1.2 didn't fix the problem.
Funny that comparing my local and remote inbox I can see that the last email in local inbox is from June 26 2008, just about 1 hour after upgrading evolution to 2.22.2-0ubuntu2 (from synaptic history).

I've tried doing backup/restore with partial success.

From evolution menu: file -> backup settings, then switch to fresh unix account, start evolution and choose restore from first-run wizard. Restore process took some time, as my inbox is quite large.

And it worked, I mean I was able to receive new messages. Few mails have vanished in the restore process as I counted all folders before. However vanished messages was either junk (mainly) or from mailing lists (just one or two), so it was acceptable.

Then I tried to do the same on my normal unix account. I deleted ~/.evolution and .gconf/apps/evolution and started evolution. Wizard pop up, I've choosen restore -- my messages and settings were restored (this time more junk vanished), but unfortunately the problem didn't disapear -- I'm still unable to see new received messages.

It appears that evolution spam filter was incorrectly classifing all new mail as spam. I've disabled it and all problems disappeared.

Disabling the spam filter didn't help me at all, I still can't get any mail past October 2007.

This just hit me today, took me an hour to figure out (thanks to comments above) that I had to DISABLE the Evolution BOGOFILTER Junk plugin (aptly named here!). This bug has been in effect for a couple of months, Im current withg updates so I wonder how many others are getting the problem but despairing!

I'm having this same problem...

Evolution 2.24.3, all junk filters disabled

I recently stopped getting email on my AOL email account, despite numerous people sending me things, and they appear in the webmail box

Now, starting today, I'm recieving emails from NONE of the 7 emails i have in evolution... (3 Gmail accounts, 1 AOL, 2 school-related emails, and one related to my website). each of these email accounts has varying protocol settings with staggered update times, because i typically get a lot of mail on them.

Are there any other fixes available for this yet? I kinda need my email....bad.

Hi there,
having or had the same problem.
I've backed up all my evolution under Intrepid and once I imported it back in Jaunty I had this stange problem of not receiving all mail!.

I checked my mailbox sizes but all are below 1 Gig so there should be no size restrictions.
It was quite strange as many mails with large attachment did get though but little ones not.

After reading the comments I checked my Junk folder and disables the BOGOFILTER Junk plugin. What the heck happened to you plugin? Why do I have to sort them all now?

Well now I will go through the mails and see I've Evolution downloaded all or only some. After all this was not a really evolutionary development from Intrepid to Jaunty :-)

reading though http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=451779 I realised that the 'Junk folder solution' was not mentioned in bugzilla and it appears that nothing has happened since.
